What Is The Engine Management Light?

The EML or Engine Management Light is part of your cars onboard diagnostics system (OBD), your car is controlled and it’s performance is monitored by microchips in the ECU and regulate variables scubas the engine speed, fuel mix and ignition timing to name but a few.

When the engine management system comes across a problem that it cannot automatically adjust it displays the engine management light on your dashboard, this yellow or red indicator highlights the issue to you and it also records a code in it’s internal memory which can be diagnosed by PDL MOT & Repairs using our in house diagnostic trouble shooting tools.

Originally engine management systems varied widely in their ability and what they were capable of doing, the engine management light is reserved in all systems formally emissions related problems or issues that may effect the emissions output of your vehicle.

What to do if the engine management light comes on:

Check your dashboard for other lights that may have come on too, these may indicate low oil pressure or overheating, should you see any of these associated lights you should pull over immediately in a  safe location and turn off your engine.

If the EML come on or starts to blink then you may have a problem, the first thing you should do in such cases is to make an appointment with one of our Qualified Service Technicians as soon as you possibly can, If the light is fixed on then it may not be an emergency but you shout call us and get it checked all the same.

A blinking engine management light usually indicates a severe engine misfire allowing unburned fuel to be dumped into the exhaust system. There it can quickly raise the temperature of the catalytic converter to a point where damage is likely, requiring an expensive repair. If this occurs, you should reduce power and have the vehicle checked as soon as possible.

Reduce your speed and load

If your EML is blinking or you notice serious drop off in performance such as a loss of power, reduce your speed and also reduce your load on the engine, if you are towing a trailer or caravan it is prudent to stop immediately to reduce the strain, have your car booked into our Bristol Road garage ASAP to avoid further damage.

How long does it take to diagnose the problem?

Our trained mechanics use the latest diagnostic testing equipment and can scan your cars ECU for fault codes quickly and easily, we can normally diagnose the fault with your engine management system within 10 -15 minutes, we can also reset the fault lights once the vehicle has been fixed.
