Benefits Of Choosing An Independent Car Garage
We were thrilled to read that a recent survey revealed over 70 % of motorists in the UK would choose an independent car garage for their car maintenance instead of a larger dealership. Obviously, we couldn’t agree more and will always be a huge advocate for not only us, but all independent car garages across the UK.
So how come 70% of motorists prefer us? We digged a little deeper to find out what makes the independents more preferable to the larger car dealerships….
It’s all about the money
It is a well-known fact that independent car garages tend to have lower prices and can offer better deals on car maintenance repairs than the larger dealership garages. How? Independent mechanics aren’t usually tied to fixed prices set by dealerships; they have the – well – independence to make decisions over cost and will be more willing and able to negotiate prices. This way, you are more likely to be able to barter a good deal.
Supporting local businesses
This was a very popular reason in the survey, and we, as an independent garage couldn’t be more grateful. We like to think that the wonderful 70% who choose us over dealerships like to support local businesses because a minor repair to a dealership wouldn’t have much of an effect on their profits. Whereas with an independent, it could make all the difference. And it usually does!
The personal touch
The larger, more corporate dealerships are generally very busy and can lose the personal touch through no fault of their own. Many dealership garages have set targets and can be so driven by this, they lose the level of attention that an independent garage can offer. Because of this, independents will find it easier to create a more specific and tailored service for its customers.
Additional charges
A sad fact is that main car dealership mechanics have grown a reputation of upselling and advising on repairs that aren’t necessarily needed in addition to the initial repairs requested. It’s part of their job, so it’s not their fault, but they can convince you that you NEED to have repairs or adjustments made to make your car roadworthy. The majority of independents – including us – will only advise on what you really need to have repaired/adjusted.
Straight from the horse’s mouth
A suit and tie approach can look more professional at a car dealership, but we find that most motorists prefer to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth and speak directly to the mechanic who provided the service. Speaking directly to the mechanic also avoids any miscommunications and can feel more trustworthy when hearing it first-hand.
Local and convenient
You are more likely to find a large car dealership either in the next town or on a busy main road or retail park. Smaller independent garages tend to be ‘just up the road/round the corner’, simple to walk back from and much less likely to create the problem of how you’re going to get home when your car is in the garage.
